There are two squads (White & Red) at Liberty University that work together to promote Flames spirit and support for the university athletics! Both cheer at football games and share the responsibility of cheering for volleyball and basketball games. The White squad shows off their skills at they pump up the crowd on the sidelines and on the court at this game against High Point University!
The Red squad has been preparing from the start of the year for the Universal Cheerleaders Associations (UCA) College National Championship, at which they competed January 19th. This game was their final performance of their routine before they left for Orlando, Florida. But not before being a little delayed due to snow here in Lynchburg!
In order to do their 3 tier stunts safely, the Red and White squads roll the mats out during halftime!
The routine demonstrates the team's skills in several elements - dance, cheer and crowd leading, tumbling, and various stunts and pyramids. The team and Coach Sydnor prepping for their performance - getting focused!
In the last week before Nationals, the Red squad performed their routine at least three times to an audience at basketball games and an exhibition. So, I became pretty familiar with their routine. Photographing cheer is something that continually challenges me as a photographer as I'm sure it does each of these athletes. I can only hope to approach it with a fresh point of view and produce images that demonstrate the same thing!
Congratulations to Coach Jennifer Sydnor and the Liberty University Squad for their hard work and their 6th place Nationals finish! Go Flames!
